About

Zamokwakhe Lincoln Mthokozisi Khumalo was born at Thokazi, Nongoma, on 30 May 1958. He received his primary education at Thokazi B.C. School and was matriculated at Mlokothwa High School in Nongoma in 1978.

He obtained his Secondary Teacher’s Diploma in 1986, B.A in 1987, Honours B.A. in 1988 and Master of Arts in 1996 at University of Zululand. His dissertation was entitled: The Portrayal of Themes in Blose’s Uqomisa Mina Nje Uqomisa Iliba. In 1998 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Natal, Durban. The title of his thesis was: Ucwaningo Olunzulu Nodwendwe LoMdabu (A Critical Analysis of Traditional Marriage).

Professor Khumalo had worked for the Department of Post and Telecommunication as Exchange Telephonist in 1979 to 1980 and as Counter-Clerk in 1981 to 1983 respectively. He joined the staff of the University of Zululand as a Temporary Junior Lecturer in the Department of African Languages in 1987. Between 1988 to 1996 he became lecturer in the same Department. Between 1977 to 1999 he became Professor and Head of the same Department. Between 1999 and 2004 he was the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zululand.

Prof Khumalo has served as Senior Examiner for Matric IsiZulu Literature paper DET for many years. He has served as External Examiner of Honours, Masters and Doctoral Theses for University of Durban-Westville, Natal (now KwaZulu-Natal) and Limpopo. He has supervised more than twenty (20) Honours, more than 15 Masters and more than 12 Doctoral students.

He has served in various Council, Senate and Faculty Committees at the University. He has represented the University in many external organizations. He has served as a member of committee in many external Council including KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Language Council, USiba Writers Guild, Voortrekker / Ncome Museum Council.

Prof Khumalo is a member of various language, heritage, Professional and cultural Association including SAFOS, ALASA, NSA, Isivivane Solwazi Namasiko, Insika YamaNtungwa, Abelusi Bolimi LwesiZulu and others.

Prof Khumalo is the referee for the NRF. He has published and presented many papers nationally and internationally. He has established Inkanyezi Yokusa Journal in the Department at the University of Zululand. He acted as a reader of unpublished manuscripts for various publishers. Among other involvement, he conducts workshops for budding and established authors.

To date he has written more than 12 books which include praise poetry, poetry, essays, folklore and manual. He has contributed in various anthologies of other authors. He has won a number of literary awards including the prestigious B.W. Vilakazi – Shuter and Shooter Award for Literature.
