About

Mr Smanga Welford Nhlakanipho Kanyile is a lecturer in the Department of English within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zululand. He obtained his Master of Arts in English in 2022 and is currently pursuing his doctoral studies. Mr Kanyile serves as a member of the Department’s Community Engagement Committee, where he acts as the liaison officer between the Department and participating schools in the King Cetshwayo District. In August 2024, he facilitated a guest lecture on Feminism featuring two guest lecturers from UNISA and the University of Limpopo, an event organised and hosted by Dr L. Mafu for third-year and honours students. He has previously worked as an educator, Lead Educator, and Head of Department (Languages) in various schools, including Dlangezwa High School. He has presented a conference paper on Problematizing Ubuntu and is currently engaged in several writing projects, including articles on selected short stories by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Gcina Mhlophe; a paper examining intersections between Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own and works by African female authors; and a co-authored book on John Milton’s Paradise Lost.

  • Western Canon: Shakespearean texts, John Milton, Ben Johnson, John Donne etc.
  • African cannon: Bessie Head, Ngugi wa Thiongo, Ousmane Sembene, Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie, Oyeronke Oyewumi,
  • With keen interest in critical analysis and research in poetry and Feminism.
  • Western Feminism, African Feminism, Postcolonialism, and Ubuntu Philosophy, Christianity, and Discourse Analysis.
