About
Dr Khayelihle Nkosi is a Sociolinguist and a lecturer at the University of Zululand (main campus) in Richards Bay, South Africa. He holds a National Diploma, a B-Tech, a Master’s degree, and a PhD in Linguistics from the Tshwane University of Technology. His doctoral research focused on language attitudes and language policy within municipal contexts. In addition to his academic training, Dr Nkosi is a qualified Language Practitioner in English and isiZulu.
His research interests include multilingualism, language attitudes, language policy and planning, and language in education. He has presented scholarly papers at national and international conferences and published work in peer-reviewed journals. His current research explores language use in multilingual classrooms and its implications for equitable education in post-apartheid South Africa.
With more than ten years of experience in higher education, Dr Nkosi has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including Introduction to Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Syntax, and Language Planning. He is known for his interactive and student-centred teaching approach, which promotes critical thinking, engagement, and inclusivity. He frequently incorporates real-life case studies and African linguistic contexts to enhance relevance and deepen student understanding.
Dr Nkosi is also involved in curriculum development initiatives aimed at decolonising linguistic content and advancing the role of African languages in academia. Beyond teaching and research, he mentors emerging scholars, serves on language policy advisory committees, and advocates for the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages. His work continues to bridge academic inquiry and social impact, contributing to a socially conscious generation of linguists.
