About
Dr Zipho N. Snyman holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Criminology and Forensic Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). She also holds a Master of Social Sciences degree in Criminology and is appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Zululand. She has represented the Department on the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee and on the University of Zululand Library Committee. In addition, she has coordinated the undergraduate programme and served as Tutor Coordinator for the Department of Criminal Justice.
Before joining the University of Zululand, she served as a contract lecturer in the Discipline of Criminology and Forensic Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Prior to her academic appointments, she completed an internship with the Department of Community Safety and Liaison in the KwaZulu-Natal Province (Pietermaritzburg), where she monitored and evaluated police performance across the province. Her responsibilities included assessing the implementation of policing policies and directives by the South African Police Service (SAPS) at both national and provincial levels, as well as examining police service delivery within local communities.
Dr Snyman worked closely with SAPS members, community structures, and the communities served by the police. She gained extensive experience in industry-related report writing, and in designing questionnaires and surveys for gathering data from police officials and community members. She also participated in monthly Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) meetings alongside the Department of Community Safety and Liaison Secretariat, SAPS, and IPID directors. Her work further involved handling complaint cases related to stock theft, sexual offences, domestic violence, gender-based violence, and other crime-related matters.
