About

Jéan Steyn is a tenured full professor of criminal justice, within the Department of Criminal Justice, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, at the University of Zululand. Most recently, he was the Head of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Zululand, as well as the Executive Dean and Head of the School of Applied Human Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Before said, Jéan was the Academic Leader / Deputy Dean of Research and Higher Degrees, and the Academic Leader / Head of Department of the Criminology and Forensic Studies Discipline / Department within the School of Applied Human Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Looking further back, he was employed as an associate professor (also lecturer and senior lecturer) within the Department of Safety and Security Management at the Tshwane University of Technology, for just over a decade. Afore, he was a functional member and commander in the South African Police Service, for ten years. He is a member of the Academy of Science and Arts, Council on Higher Education Quality Committee, Criminological Society of Africa, South African Association of Public Administration and Management, and Association of Southern African Schools and Departments of Public Administration and Management, and many more. He is also an honorary member of the Police Association of South Africa. Professor Steyn has numerous awards, including but not limited to, distinguished awards for executive and specialised leadership, Faculty Senior Researcher of the Year, Faculty Junior Researcher of the year, teaching awards, community engagement awards, and best practitioner in industry awards. His doctoral thesis, and masters’ dissertation, received the Police Association of South Africa award for ‘Best South African Doctoral Thesis in Policing for 2006’, and ‘Best South African Masters Dissertation for Policing in 2002’. Jéan has been a visiting professor to various universities and institutions, over time, in the United States of America, Europe, Scandinavia, and India. He has published widely, and extensively, in high impact international and national journals, books and book chapters; specialising in police occupational and organisational culture, CRISPR-Cas9 biotechnology DNA change and crime, artificial intelligence and crime, and advanced quantitative research methodology in criminology and criminal justice (some other fields published in are forensics, law, psychology, sociology, higher education, and science, amongst others).

Professor Steyn was also the Editor-In-Chief of the Southern African Journal of Criminology and Victimology. The South African National Prosecuting Authority, Innovation and Policy Support Office, cutting-edge research on ‘Smart Justice’ and ‘Swift Justice’, was pioneered by Jéan. Professor Steyn has chaired, and presented (keynote addresses, papers, etc.), at many international conferences and symposiums around the globe. He has successfully (graduated) over seventy doctoral, masters and honours’ candidates, and supervised several postdoctoral fellows. Jéan is often quoted and interviewed in the media (for example: United Nations, Times of India, Voice of America, Paris Africa Report, Sunday Times, SABC Prime Time News live, eNCA, CheckPoint, 702 and CapeTalk, amongst many others).
