Dr Teboho J. Lebakeng

Dr Teboho J. Lebakeng previously lectured in sociology at the then Vista University in Soweto (now University of Johannesburg) and later at the University of the North (now University of Limpopo) and, more recently, was a contract lecturer in Strategic Intelligence and Forecasting at the University of Pretoria.

From February 2007 to December 2008, and from 2011 to 2014, he was a Political Counsellor at the South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as part of the South Africa’s United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) teams. He also worked on various regions such as West, East, North and Central Africa as senior strategic intelligent analyst. On 20 November 2017 until 20 November 2018, he was seconded as Head of Intelligence Component for SADC Preventive Mission in the Kingdom of Lesotho.

He obtained his doctorate from the University of Limpopo (South Africa), master’s degree in sociology from the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), master’s degree in human services and organizational development from Springfield College (USA) and bachelor’s degree in sociology from the American University in Cairo (Egypt). In terms of non-academic training, he underwent military and intelligence training in the People’s Republic of China in 1977.

As an academic, he has published chapters in academic books and has contributed articles in journals such as Africa Insight; CODESRIA Bulletin; Global Dialogue; Alternation; Southern African Journal of Folklore Studies; Southern Africa Political and Economic Monthly; Caribbean Journal of Philosophy; Calabash: Journal of Indigenous Knowledge Studies, Africology: Journal of Pan African Studies and Presence Africaine. He also published in magazines and newspapers such as Tribute, Botsotso, Sowetan, City Press, Sowetan Sunday World, The Star and Sunday Times.
