About

Dr Fairhope Ntokozo Gumede is currently a Lecturer in African Languages and Culture within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zululand. Before assuming this position, she worked as a language teacher under the iLembe District in KwaZulu-Natal. She has extensive experience as a Deputy Chief Marker for NSC isiZulu Paper 2.

Dr Gumede has published widely and extensively in high-impact international and national journals, as well as in book chapters, with a specialisation in African Culture and Onomastic Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. She has chaired and presented (including keynote addresses and paper presentations) at various international and national conferences and symposiums. Dr Gumede serves on numerous institutional committees. She is also a member of the Digital Cultural Dictionary Project, sponsored by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. In addition, she supervises postgraduate students.

Dr Gumede serves as an external reviewer for various accredited journals. She is currently working on an isiZulu onomastics article titled “Origin and Explanation of the Names of Schools and Villages in Zashuke, Bulwer.”
